Ngari is a contemporary prefecture in the Tibet Autonomous Region that shares borders with Xinjiang Province and India’s state of Jammu and Kashmir. It has a long and distinguished history as a cultural region and home to a series of kingdoms and principalities. Notably, this was the site of the 10th-century Purang-Gugé kingdom and its associated revival of Buddhism during the Local Hegemonic Period of Tibetan history (c. 929-1056).
