This article discusses the prominent socio-cultural aspects of the Uray, a distinctive Buddhist merchant caste of Kathmandu, and considers the modernization of Newar Buddhism with reference to them. For centuries, the Uray merchants have been among the most influential Newar Buddhist lay groups and a significant community among the Kathmandu valley's cultural elite.
