The article discusses sex and motherhood among the brahmins and chhetris of east-central Nepal. The article attempts to give some sense of the lives of mothers and their pre-school children in a rural, predominately Brahman-Chetri community on the edge of the Kathmandu valley. The author hopes that the information collected in this report will be applicable in the on-going development programs for family planning, health, and educational services for women and children. The article discusses attitudes towards fertility according to a Hindu religious belief system. In Hindu belief the need for offspring is the only legitimate reason for marriage and sex. The article talks about the perceived effects of menstruation and intercourse on female health, bareness, miscarriages, and abortion in the context of Nepal.
