Abstract: (Show)

The article tries to discover whether the Sarangi (a musical instrument) is simply a begging device for the Gaiyena (person who plays Sarangi to earn a livelihood) or is a part of Nepali culture. The author discusses the issue with a sociological perspective. The article is based on the study among the Gaiyena community of Batulechow. The article discusses the new professions acquired by this community. The article includes the objective of forming Gandharba Samaj Sudhar Sadan. The author argues that in this modern era the act of playing sarangi must be taken as a step in preserving our culture. (Rajeev Ranjan Singh 2007-02-12)
