Abstract: (Show)

The article surveys the problems of the language medium in the education system of Nepal. Actually the article presented here is a short version of sociolinguistic study of the Nepali language as the medium of higher education in Nepal. The study is based on the survey carried out with the assistance of two researchers in 1979. The survey area covered three multi-purpose campuses located in the far western, the middle, and the eastern development region in Nepal. The article aims to provide a clear picture of the language medium currently used in classes and examination in order to help planners establish Nepali as a the exclusive medium in higher education in Nepal. The article concludes that the basic medium used is English and the author suggests that the student should have choices for optional languages as a medium of learning as the students face problems in understanding.
