The article gives an account of social change and status emulation among the Nisyangte of Manang, Nepal. It attempts to extend the ethnographic basis of evidence for continuity of social change in the region through data drawn from an immediately neighboring and equally entrepreneurial group, the people of Nyishang. It tries to highlight the complexity of one particular element in the study of social change in Nepal, the somewhat vexed issue of status emulation, through comparison of the different courses of social change followed by Thakali and Nyishang people.
