The author presents an analysis of the relationship of local deities in Bhutan to their territories and to the people living within those territories. The paper is based on fieldwork carried out in from 1996 to 1999 and addresses rituals performed for local deities and perceived kinship relations with a deity by local populations. The paper begins with an examination of the term yul, particularly as used in Bhutan and compared to other locational nouns. (Ben Deitle 2006-02-10)
