Manners of Eating

Eating is a very important activity and the Bhutanese tradition prescribes a set of good manners to be adopted during eating. The Bhutanese code of etiquette are generally based on the Buddhist monastic discipline and the Buddhist concept of wholesome comportment. Slurping, munching loudly, chewing with open mouth, showing gluttonous gestures, making loud noises, etc. are considered bad behavoiurs of eating. The Bhutanese profess a fundamental view of eating to live rather than living to eat. Thus, people eat with moderation and also do so with respect and conscientiousness.
