Gotang (mgo thang) was one of the Gyelrong (rgyal rong) regions. According to some folk stories, it is considered to be one of the eighteen Gyelrong kingdoms. In the mid-Ming and late-Ming period, it submitted to Muchigyel Gyelpo (mu phyi rgyal rgyal po), one of the eighteen Gyelrong kings. In 1796, the Qing court conferred the title of Yutong Pacification Commissioner (Yutong anfusi, 鱼通安抚司) on Jia Tian-en, the son of Muchigyel Gyelpo’s primary wife Mrs. Bao, who was forced to flee from the Muchigyel region to Mepung in Dartsendo (dar rtse mdo).
