China is one of the largest and most powerful of contemporary nation-states in the world today. It currently includes the vast majority of cultural Tibet in five of its western provinces - Tibet Autonomous Region (western, central and northern Tibet, and the western areas of eastern Tibet), Qinghai (northeastern Tibet), Sichuan (eastern Tibet), Yunnan (far southeastern Tibet), and Gansu (far northeastern Tibet).
