Ngangla Trong village serves as the religious and cultural centre for the people of Ngangla gewog. In the past the village name is said to be known as Dungkarpong, the hill of conch because it was said that two conch shells were discovered from a rock at the place where the temple is located today. But later the village was known as ‘Ngangla Trong’, which means the village of banana. A local says that it is so called because the place is popular for bananas and also believed that, the houses in the village were all bachim made of bamboo and roofed with banana leaves. It is therefore known as "Ngangla Trong' the village of bananas.
