Sumthrang Samdrup Choedzong was established by Dechog Nyoton Trulzhig Choejey following the direction of his father the tantric master who prophesised about this place at a tri-junction surrounded by symbolic sites in its four directions with a stone pillar a the centre. He established the monastery in around 1220s after having found the prophesised location. The monastery is looked after by his successive incumbent heirs known as the Sumthrang Choejey.
