Taktsang is one of the most sacred sites and a landmark of Bhutan visited by Guru Rinpoché in the 8th century in his wrathful form riding a tiger. He is said to have meditated in a cave on the cliff where the main temple stands today, and also to have concealed many treasures. The cliff was later visited by many great scholars and yogis who meditated in several caves and places around the cliff. In 1692 Gyelse Tenzin Rabgye built the main temple known as Taktsang Pelphuk Lhakhang on the Taktsang cliff. Later the temple was destroyed by fire in 1998 and was restored in 2005 without change to its original design.
