In the 17th century after the decendents of Pha Drung Drung offered the Hungrel dzong to Zhabdrung. It was demolished in 1644 and laid the foundation for new construction. It was consecreated in 1646 and was renamed the Rinchen Pungpi dzong the fortress on the knoll of jewels. Today the dzong houses the offices of Dzongkhag administration and the district monastic body.
