Abstract: (Show)

Beckwith demonstrates in this article that the Mongol rulers favored Tibetan lamas at their courts because of their skill in the fields of medicine, astrology, and letters. The willingness and ability of the Tibetan lamas to perform the traditional services of Mongolian shamans at court, particularly in the area of astrology, contributed greatly to their rise as imperial preceptors.
