Sacred Mountain

Neri (gnas ri) is a specific class of mountains in Tibet which are understood as sacred mountains that are the "abode" (né) of major tantric Buddhist deities, rather than just associated with "local deities" (yül lha). Such mountains then are the site of Buddhist pilgrimage practices and are part of the sacred landscape for Tibetans across the plateau, rather than only for local residents.
