Horse Race Event

Initially, horses were used for transport of goods and in warfare, where their riders used swords and spears to take aim at their enemies. Over time, horses and horsemanship became closely affiliated with a wide range of Tibetan customs and cultural events. The physical skills of both animal and rider came to be celebrated in horse race events such as Gyukchen, a speed race, and Drödur, which tests dexterity and control, as well as events where riders shoot targets or stretch themselves nearly to the ground while riding at a full gallop. Tibetan communities, especially those in nomadic and pastoral areas, also celebrate the animals’ beauty during festivals, during which they may win awards based on their appearance and adornments.
