Thig or iconometrics in Bhutan refers to fine arts, which is one of the thirteen arts and crafts of Bhutan and constitutes a major high culture. Including a rich variety of line drawings, wall paintings, painted, embroidered and applique hangings, manuscript illuminations, protection charms and diagrams and mandala structures, fine arts in Bhutan almost always has a sacred content and is found primarily in religious institutions and places. Although Bhutan had a fine arts created before the 17th century, it was in the middle of the 17th century that it received formal state support. Today, Bhutan still has some of the oldest and most exquisite Buddhist fine arts in the Himalayas preserved in its remote temples.
