Painting

Bhutan has vibrant tradition of iconographical painting, which is one of the thirteen arts and crafts promoted by the state since the 17th century. There are existent samples of temple wall painting created even before the formation of Bhutan as a state and the Bhutanese most likely received the Tibetan styles of painting such as the Karma Gadri and Menthang. Painting were done on mud walls or on canvas using paint made from earth, mineral and vegetables. People increasingly use imported synthetic colours today and produce a lot of commercial painting for the tourists market.
