Blacksmithery

The tradition of black smithery was well known in particular parts of Bhutan where iron ores were common. Some historical records such as the biography of Tibetan iron-chain bridge builder Thangtong Gyalpo indicate that some parts of Bhutan were rich in iron ore. Bhutanese used iron to make ritual objects, kitchen utensils, farming tools and weapons. Iron was not used in house construction although there is an account of iron castle in Bumthang in the ancient oral accounts. In the past, certain families specialised in this trade and would travel from village to village to provide their services.
