The Bhutanese culinary world is very diverse due to the wide range of geographic and climatic conditions for cultivation. Thus, the staple food of the different regions of Bhutan differed from each other until recent times. The regions and villages also have their local specialties associated often with a festival after harvesting crops in autumn. Generally speaking, the Bhutanese eat cereal dishes which form the main component of a meal with a fried or stewed meat, fish or vegetable dishes with or without gravy. Soups and drinks including milk, butter milk, alcoholic beverages are served as side dishes. Porridges are served in the morning and snacks served with tea.
