Recitation of Scriptures
The Bhutanese Buddhists read scriptures loudly as rituals to clear away misfortunes, accumulate merit, elongate life, enhance wealth, spread the Buddhist teachings and as spiritual practice to reach enlightement. Reading the scriptures are said to be highly meritorious activities which will attract the blessings of the enlightened beings and the support of the protector deities. Bhutanese families often sponsor the reading of specific scriptures for a particular purpose and occasionally even sponsor the reading of the whole Buddhist canon.
