Exegesis

This is one of the main pedagogic methods of providing education in the Bhutanese monastic institutions. It is also one of the three classic scholarly activities, writing and debate being the other two. The teacher gives a thorough-going exegesis of a Buddhist text either giving a snoptic analysis or a word by word explanation. The students later recollect the teacher's exegesis, practise giving similar expositions and have to demonstrate it during tests.
