Rammed Mud Wall

In western Bhutan, most houses are built with walls made from rammed mud. The right kind of soil is powdered and sieved and mixed with water to form the right consistency. The mixture is then put into a box frame created for the wall. Women then use large and long pestles to ram the mud while singing the traditional mud ramming songs. The mud walls survive long after the timber structures has disintegrated. It is quite common to see standing ruins of rammed mud walls in western Bhutan.
