Clay Sculpture
The best of Bhutan's clay work can be seen in the clay sculpture of Buddhist images. Most of Bhutan's large statues in the temples and dzongs are built from clay. Local clay is mixed with water and beaten to make it gain a fine sticky texture. Paper pulp is also added to help the clay hold together and precious jewels are said to have been powdered and added to the clay base as an act of devotion. Wire frames are sometimes inserted in the clay structure to hold the clay. Once the statue is completed, it is normally painted with different colours.
