Invocation of Jomo

Bhutanese have strong belief in the existence of a wide range of non-human deities and spirits in the world. The Bhutanese world view has their habitat teeming with non-human spirits, some of whom grants boons while others causes a lot of harm to the human population in the form of illnesses, accidents and misfortunes. As these spirits have a big role to play in human wellbeing, a harmonious relationship with the non-human denizens of the world is considered very important. The jomo deities, literally the grand old ladies, are female territorial spirits who have to be periodically venerated or appeased through a female medium.
