House Events

The construction of a house in Bhutan involves a series of rituals and celebratory events. The first ritual takes place during the groundbreaking event, when the land is being received from the Goddess of Earth. Rituals are also held during the laying of cornerstones, erecting the door and windows, putting the roof on and the finally the consecration of the house. Large wooden phalluses are hung on the four corners of the new house in the past but this ritual has now almost fully stopped. During these events of construction, the master mason and the master carpentar and the owner of the house are often congratulated by neighbours, friends and family members with scarves and small amounts of cash.
