Manners of Drinking

The Bhutanese follow wholesome manners of eating and drinking. The manners of drinking acceptable in Bhutanese society are based on or heavily influenced by the comportments prescribed in Buddhist monastic discipline. It is considered bad manners to slurp or blow loudly while drinking as it is to burp. Drinking too quickly and excessively are also viewed as crude manners. Young children are groomed by elders during meal times on how they should eat and drink. They are taught to drink carefully, slowly and quietly without spilling. They are taught to be modest and polite while receiving drinks. The Bhutanese court etiquette dictate how the cup must be held or placed. Such official codes of conduct are enforced during official occasions.
