Social History

The history of Bhutan's social structures, societal organisation and management, and its changes through the centures has neither been documented nor studied properly. Although we have no books or essays dealing purely with the social history of Bhutan, there are ample sources in the form of religious histories, biographies, tax slips, government decrees, etc. and substantial oral histories which give us some knowlege of Bhutan's social systems. While the political governance changed during ages, many of the social practices and systems appears to have sustained without a great deal of change until recently. Today Bhutan is beginning a new chapter of social history as it witnesses major social transformation.
