Regional History

Bhutan, until recent times, was harshly divided into valleys and linguistic groups with the vast majority of the population living isolated lives. Thus, the regions have their own accounts of origin and evolution. These oral and written narratives of the regions and valleys give the specific accounts of society and life in these regions and valleys. Regional histories are crucial for understanding Bhutan's cultural diversity and Bhutan's history before the 17th century, when the regions were unified to form the nation state of Bhutan.
