Manor House History

The nagtshang or the dark nest refers to the manor houses or large langholding establishments in central and eastern Bhutan. The houses were started by prominent figures in the past either in the religious or in the political domain. Thus, these establishments usually have some accounts of their origins and evolution passed down orally although written records on their history is scanty if not non-existent. The understanding of the nagtshang and its social stature is crucial for understanding Bhutanese social structures and practices.
