Trade History

Bhutanese traders travelled with their caravans between India and Tibet carrying various kinds of merchandise on their horses. In the course of their long journey, they would encounter difficulties such as robbery, illness and bad weather, would see different kinds of people and places and would experience different cultures and traditions. These experiences would become exotic topics for stories when they return home. Stories of their adventures are told and retold by others although there was no practice of writing them down. Thus, we have no written travelogue except a few pilgrimage guides and religious reports by some religious figures.
