Sacred Rock Narrative

Bhutanese consider rocks and stones as special and sacred. They are identified as a seat, a coveyance, bath tub, hat, body part, etc. of exalted spiritual figures in the past. There are rocks which also has dints considered to be the footprint, body print or hand print left behind miraculously by enlightened saints. In the same way, there are rocks which are considered to be forms of religoius implements such as books, vajra thunderbolt, ritual dagger, vase, etc. In the well known holy sites of Bhutan, many rocks are attributed with spiritual stories and symbolism and caretakers of the temples and pilgrimage guides tell incredible stories about what they are. In some places, people squeeze in between rocks as a test of purification.
