Trashi Lhünpo Monastery is one of the largest Geluk monasteries in central Tibet. It was built in the mid-15th century by Gendün Drup, the first Dalai Lama. It is located on the western outskirts of Zhikatsé city, and has been the home of the Panchen Lamas since the time of the 4th Panchen Lama. The monastery has four monastic sections, namely Shartsé College, Kyilkhang College, Tösamling College, and Ngakpa College. In the back hall is a bronze statue of Buddha and statues of the eight chief spiritual sons of the Buddha made by Gendün Drup himself. Inside the Jamkhang is the largest bronze statue of Maitreya, built by the 9th Panchen Lama. In addition, there are the relic stupas of the previous Panchen Lamas.
