Tea
Bhutanese drink tea profusely. In a traditional house, a pot for brewing tea is often kept continuously going at the fireplace. Tea is served as a drink before meals, as a refreshment and often is an essential part of breakfast. It is also served during ceremonial and festive occasions. The traditional Bhutanese tea is made by brewing tea in a large pot, then having the black tea mixed with butter and salt and churned in tea churner. It is served in small cups from a different pot or vessel after it is churned. Chinese brick tea and Indian tea balls were commonly used for this in the past but local herbs and climbers are also used to make tea. Today, the practice of drinking sweet milk tea is widespread.
