Circumambulation

Circumbulation around holy shrines such as temples and stupas is said to cleanse one of negativities and help accumulate a great deal of merits. Thus, Bhutan has a vibrant culture of people going around temple, stupas and monuments in the clockwise direction and chanting prayers and mantras with a rosary. Old people without work spend the whole day doing circumambulation but working people do this practice in the morning and evening. Today, this spiritual practice is being combined with physical exercise and people sometimes keep count of the rounds.
