Direct transcendence (thod rgal) is one of the two primary contemplative systems in the Seminal Heart (snying thig) tradition of the Great Perfection (rdzogs chen), the other being “breakthrough” (khregs chod). The former signifies a type of cultivated spontaneous imagery culminating in visions of maṇḍalas of Buddhas, while the latter points to a type of open awareness practice. It is described as a direct and quick path; hence, the etymological root of the term, "crest-cross."

Direct Transcendence:

A term used in Buddhist scholastic literature to signify that one "skips through" a gradated sequence of contemplative or ritual actions, i.e., some of the phases are "skipped" or "leaped over" as one progresses through the sequence.

In Great Seal Literature (phyag rgya chen po, Skt. Mahāmudrā), the term evidently can be used in a somewhat derogatory fashion to signify someone who has only “evanescent” realization in contrast to the “instantaneous” (cig car ba) realization of the best of practitioners. This use of the term to signify a half-way house between the gradual and instantaneous approaches to realization may have a polemical tone that targets the prominent Nyingma (rnying ma) valorization of the term to signify one of its highest contemplative traditions.

The text of the commentary also defines the 'half-jumper' (ardhapluta, phyed-'phar).
